Zehra Haq

In the late 1980s, aware of no suitable provision for her mother-in-law who didn’t speak English, Zehra Haq spent seven months volunteering at an advice centre to learn ways of supporting an immigrant community suffering a strong sense of culture shock as well as struggling with a language barrier. She then set up Dhek Bhal which means ‘looking after.’ Dhek Bhal has run numerous community care projects such as residential trips; holiday play schemes; providing a worker to liaise between Asian pupils, their families and school; and providing tutors to ensure Asian children have the same educational opportunities as other students.
