Rissa Mohabir is the founder of Trauma Awareness. She draws on 30 years’ experience as a trainer for homeopaths and medical doctors in the UK and internationally, notably in Serbia and Croatia post-conflict (2000-7). She pursued postgraduate studies at the Somatic Experiencing Trauma Institute (SETI) in New York in 2009-10, to develop training modules for staff, support workers and volunteers in trauma-related organisations. They were piloted with Barnardo’s Bristol (2014) and NHS Bristol Helpline (2016), and delivered to a wide range of services, particularly those working with refugees. Rissa and Associates are currently developing generic trauma-informed online materials in Bristol with a special international opportunity to pilot an Arabic version with an NGO in Sulaimaniyah, North Iraq. She published Under the Shade of a Tree: Somali Women Speak and Leaving our Homeland: Syria to the Isle of Bute (2017), a collection of personal narratives on the impact of war on women.
