Peter Kurz has been Mayor of the city of Mannheim since 2007 (he was re-elected to another eight-year term in 2015). He was previously the city’s mayor for education, culture and sports. He is president of the German association of urban development and housing (vhw) and a member of the executive committee of the Global Parliament of Mayors. Until 1999 he was an administrative judge in Karlsruhe and leader of the Social Democratic Faction in Mannheim. He has a particular interest in economic and social policy and the enablement of a peaceful and tolerant urban coexistence in which each individual gets a chance to succeed. The reorganisation of municipal affairs has been his focus since becoming mayor. His goal is a municipal policy that relies on the participation of its citizens in the change process.
