Clare Owens

Clare Owens is a social artist who co-founded and co-directs Squash, a food, arts and environment focused community organisation rooted in Toxteth/Liverpool 8. Since 2007 Squash’s practice has embraced the potential of local people by reclaiming food and craft production, making extraordinary public events and co-creating beautiful spaces in which people can connect and live well.

Inspired by the lifespan of apple trees planted in their community food garden, Squash are developing an ambitious participatory plan for their neighbourhood, ‘The 100 year Street’. At the heart of this plan is Squash’s new eco-building, co-designed by community members which opened in May 2018 and is home to a cafe, an ingredients shop, a kitchen garden and events space. This summer, Squash was awarded best shop at the BBC Radio 4 Food and Farming Awards.
