What can we learn from cities worldwide? Leading researchers, novelists, city planners, writers and commentators report on cities that they work in, know intimately, continue to praise and worry about. Novelist and essayist Amit Chaudhuri (author of Calcutta: Two Years in the City and a forthcoming novel about Mumbai) looks at Calcutta, one of the ‘great cities of modernity’; architectural writer Owen Hatherley reports on European cities that once created urban environments more pleasant, comfortable and attractive than any created anywhere else in human history, but which are now in crisis; Gareth Macnaughton (RMIT) looks at Melbourne; and novelist and journalist Burhan Sönmez – author most recently of Istanbul Istanbul, looks at Turkey’s economic, cultural, and historic centre. The event will be chaired by Jenny Lacey.
Gabriella Gómez-Mont is no longer able to attend this event. She will be taking part in the Building the Good Cities of the Future session (Thu 19 October, 19:30-21:15) instead.
