How do we create more homes that are driven by the needs of citizens and communities rather than developers’ profits? This session brings together innovators from across the UK who are experimenting with new ways in which the citizen sector can play a bigger role in making the homes we want and need.

The session includes an introduction to We Can Make, a live R&D programme which includes local people, architects, artists, policy-makers, academics, industry professionals and students of the #LiveWorkMake Architecture unit (University of the West of England) who are together developing ways in which citizens can have a greater role in making new homes. Much more than designing homes as products, We Can Make is concerned with re-imagining the wider legal, financial and policy-enabling framework so that citizens and communities can better meet their own housing needs, rather than relying on speculative developers or top-down schemes.

Linked to this event is the opportunity of a walking tour to explore the garden city roots of Knowle West, see possible sites under consideration, talk with local residents and view developments at Filwood Community Centre and tour the first new living space, the straw-bale TAM. Further information and booking details can be found here.
