Charles Landry and Comedia have long been pioneers of new thinking about cities. Their work on culture and cities has been influential in cities around the world. With Chris Murray (director, Core Cities), Landry now outlines why urban psychology is important. Applying different psychological aspects to understanding the city and its citizens – even creating a city personality test – helps promote better planning, wellbeing and ultimately a psychologically resilient city. For this event they are joined by Michael Sanders (chief scientist and head of research, evaluation and social action at Behavioural Insights Team) who talks about how the behavioural sciences can help create better policy in places for the future. From the commuter sitting in traffic to the police officer patrolling the streets, individuals across the city stand to gain from civic design that takes account of the things we know about judgement, decision-making and the importance of context. Rhiannon Corcoran, professor of psychology at the University of Liverpool, chairs.
