Born on Christmas Day to parents who had emigrated to Britain from Bangladesh, Nadiya Hussain grew up in a Muslim family with 5 siblings. She entered an arranged marriage aged 20, became a wife and mother herself, suffers with panic disorder and had never been on a train on her own until she travelled to film her first episode of The Great British Bake-Off:

Nadiya will be interviewed live on stage to celebrate the publication of her brand-new memoir. Join the TV presenter, chef and bestselling author as she considers her roles as mother, Muslim, working woman and celebrity, and questions the barriers which many women must cross to be accepted or heard. In her own warm, honest and humorous way, she highlights how, at the core of it all, we are essentially tackling the same issues despite our cultural, social and religious differences.
A copy of Nadiya Hussain’s latest book, Finding My Voice (rrp £20), is included with every ticket, and she will be signing books after the event.

There is no charge for collecting tickets from Box Office in advance. Alternatively select print-at-home tickets, also available to show on your smart phone (for events with reserved seating). A 5% booking fee applies online and over the phone.

Events start punctually and, out of consideration to other audience members and speakers, our policy is not to admit or issue refunds to latecomers. Please allow enough time to collect your ticket/s from the box office (if these haven’t already been posted to you), and make sure to arrive before the advertised start time to take your seat/s. Refunds are usually only available if an event is cancelled.
The Festival of Ideas endeavours to hold its events in venues that are accessible to all, but if you have specific access concerns it is advisable to contact the venue direct. St George’s Bristol regrets that due to St George’s listed-building status there is limited access to some parts of the building. However, St George’s welcomes customers with additional needs and there is a dedicated accessible entrance from Charlotte Street via a lift. Please mention your particular needs to the Box Office staff when you book and they will give you all the assistance and advice you need. Limited parking space is available for disabled ‘Blue Badge’ holders in the adjacent car park but must be reserved in advance – call the Box Office to check availability. Guide dogs are admitted to all parts of the venue. Accessible toilet facilities are located within the Bar, accessible by lift.
St George’s has recently installed a new Assisted Listening System called Sennheiser MobileConnect. Using WiFi, visitors to St George’s can now get superior quality live audio from concerts, talks, and exhibitions fed directly to their smart phone, or similar device – either through headphones or via a necklace for hearing aid users. The sound levels can be adjusted on your device to suit your needs and the House Team will be happy to assist you with this. The Sennheiser MobileConnect system has been installed to combat the poor coverage to the more traditional hearing loop within the main hall. Headphones/necklaces can be booked via the Box Office in advance or borrowed on the day, for a refundable deposit of £5. Visitors can download the Sennheiser MobileConnect app using the links below to use on their own device and can also use their own headphones.
